Gunnison Beach

New Jersey’s only legal nude beach on Sandy Hook, offering a laid‑back, family-friendly atmosphere with skyline views of NYC

Beach overview

Gunnison Beach, nestled within the Sandy Hook unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, is the only legal clothing-optional beach in New Jersey and the largest on the East Coast. It lies on federal land, meaning New Jersey’s 1999 nudity ban doesn’t apply here—though state beaches must enforce it.

The beach’s name comes from adjacent Battery Gunnison, part of the former Fort Hancock coastal defense installation. Visitors walk past these historic ruins on the way to a long stretch of sandy shore backed by dunes and lifeguard-posted zones. The clothing-optional section—typically the southern half—is clearly marked, with signage welcoming naturists and a friendly, inclusive environment that draws diverse crowds, from seasoned nudists to first-timers.

The atmosphere at Gunnison is a blend of freedom, history, and community. On sunny summer weekends, up to 5,000 people might gather—many arriving via ferry from Manhattan—basking nude under the sun with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and the Verrazzano Bridge. Lifeguards, rangers, and naturist volunteers maintain a respectful vibe, often handing out etiquette guidelines to keep the peace.
